For the Force Friday merchandising event in September last year, Loungefly released a video that included a preview of the Captain Phasma handbag (watch the video here – screencaps here). The range was released for sale on the Loungefly website in late November – and of course the Captain Phasma handbag has been high on my wish list since it was revealed. I’m so excited to finally be able to get my hands on the bag and matching coin purse – today’s review features the mini dome bag. The bag is currently in stock at Loungefly.com – priced at US$70.00 each. There is also a matching women’s wallet (US$40.00 each) and coin purse (US$21.00 each) that are available separately.
The handbag came in a black drawstring dust bag, with the classic Star Wars logo printed in silver on one side. The handbag is black and silver, using the design of Captain Phasma’s helmet as inspiration – the shape of the bag works really well with this theme. The handbag itself is amazing – the shiny chrome finish is quite mirror-like in person. The front and back are different, showing the front and back of Phasma’s helmet. A piece of trivia that I found interesting – Captain Phasma’s armour has a “brushed chromium” finish because it is coated with metal salvaged from a Naboo starship once owned by Emperor Palpatine… a design choice made by Phasma herself to highlight her position of power. I like the fact that the high-ranking female Stormtrooper Commander has chosen to stand out to highlight her position in the First Order – what a great theme for a women’s handbag, this bag certainly stands out too!
The back of the bag features the Loungefly x Star Wars metal plaque, which is highlighted with black enamel. The main panels of the bag are made from a silver patent faux leather, printed with black details. The both sides of the bag are embossed, so the black panels are slightly recessed around the edges, giving that extra detailed touch, rather than a flat print. The sides of the bag are stiff, so the bag retains it’s shape when empty. The top zip is black with two sturdy silvertone Loungefly zipper pulls, and opens fully down each side. The two back handles are attached with silver studs featuring the First Order logo, a great touch. As with the other Loungefly x Star Wars mini dome bags, there is a contrast band around the bottom of the bag – this bag has a black band, to match the colour scheme. The bottom is also black, and has four metal stud feet, to avoid scuffing the vinyl surface when placed down.
The interior features Loungefly’s black printed Star Wars lining fabric. There are two pockets inside – a zip-up pocket on one side, an open pocket on the other side. The internal zip also features the same zipper pull with Loungefly logo as the exterior zipper – I really like the sturdy feel of these zips. The bag measures approximately 27cm long, 12cm wide, 22cm tall – with the handles adding a further 10cm or so in height. This is the same size as the other Loungefly x Star Wars mini dome bags (like the super popular R2-D2 bag) – I find this is the perfect size for me, it holds everything I need without being too bulky. The full length top zip allows easy access to the interior, which is really helpful in rigid-shape handbags.
I am so happy to be able to add this handbag to my collection – it is not common to find Star Wars handbags with a female character theme. The shiny finish is very eye-catching – it looks amazing in the sun! This bag is a great accessory to a First Order/Captain Phasma themed outfit, or it can stand alone as the central Star Wars piece paired with a subtle outfit. The black and silver colour scheme is so versatile, and will in fact reflect the colours of your outfit – I know I’m going to get a lot of use from this bag!
