Review – Comic print dress

A little while ago Macy’s added a great range of women’s Star Wars dresses to their website, and one in particular really caught my attention – the comic art dress by Hybrid. I love classic Star Wars comic art, and Macy’s can ship internationally, so I quickly placed an order. The dress is usually priced at US$44.00, but I paid only US$19.99 during a sale – it is still available in sizes XS to XL.

The fabric is 65% polyester, 35% rayon, in a heather grey colour. The dress features a repeating comic art panel print, with a black Star Wars logo printed over the top on the front. The dress has a relaxed fit, a tank top-style upper half, and is sewn in three panels – one for the front, while the back is sewn from two panels (with a center back seam). Interestingly, the front panel of the dress has the comic art panels the ‘right way’ up, but the two back dress panels have the print ‘upside down’. This doesn’t bother me, but something to note if you’re particular about that sort of detail. To cut all the dress panels in the same direction would require a lot more fabric yardage, and increase the cost of the dress – this is a simple dress design after all. The comic art features lots of characters, including Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, and Stormtroopers – fans of the ‘Topps Star Wars Card Trader’ app game will recognize many of the artwork panels from the recent ‘Comic Pop Art’ card set.

I bought mine in size XS – it measures approximately 40cm across the chest (underarm to underarm), approximately 73cm from front neckline to front hem, and approximately 121cm from back neckline to back hem. I’m only 5′ 3″ tall, so it can be hard to find longer dresses that don’t drag on the floor – this dress is a great length. The hem at the back sits just at my ankles, so I can even wear this with flats or summer sandals. The dress measures approximately 100cm across at the widest part, so it has great drape around your legs. I love the high-low hem – it’s a style I don’t see used very often for Star Wars clothing. A simple dress, but one I know I’ll get so much wear from – a fantastic addition to my summer wardrobe 🙂
