The recent Vanity Fair Star Wars special has revealed a gorgeous new photo gallery by renowed photographer Annie Leibovitz. The photos give us our first look at some of the new characters and amazing costumes from The Last Jedi, including a new glamourous city with fabulous fashion!

…a glittering casino city called Canto Bight, “a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief,” the director said. “It was an interesting challenge, portraying luxury and wealth in this universe.” So much of the Star Wars aesthetic is rooted in sandy desolation and scrapyard blight; it appealed to Johnson to carve out a corner of the galaxy that is the complete opposite. “I was thinking, O.K., let’s go ultra-glamour….

I am just blown away by these amazing photos!

Aren’t these costumes amazing! So many gorgeous outfits and accessories – perfect for ‘everyday cosplay’ style inpsiration. Very ‘Coruscant Couture’, like the opera outfits from Revenge of the Sith. These photos look like they were taken at the Met Gala, until you look closer and notice the aliens. I absolutely love them – can you pick a favourite outfit? On a related note – I would love to see this done as fan costume group!

The Vanity Fair photoshoot gives us our first look at Laura Dern’s new character – Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo. Her purple toned outfit makes me think of Leia’s classic senatorial dress, blended with the long gown of handmaiden Moteé from Revenge of the Sith. Amilyn’s outfit also includes earrings and a hair accessory – I can’t wait to get a full view of the rest of the costume details.

The Vanity Fair article also gives us a clear look at the cover photos, featuring Princess Leia, Poe Dameron, Finn, and Rose Tico.

I got a little emotional just seeing these new photos of Carrie Fisher, and I wonder how I will cope with seeing her on screen in The Last Jedi. Distracting myself from that train of thought, I am in love with her amazing cloak, I need a version of that in my wardrobe. I am excited to see that Leia is again wearing her distintive 2-stone ring, along with another ring on her left hand, and gold-tone earrings. We may not find out if these accessories have special significance for the character, but I like to think there is a story behind each one.

While the Vanity Fair photos only show Rey’s ‘Resistance’ outfit that she wears at the end of The Force Awakens, these photos give us a better look at her shirt, worn here without the vest over the top. I was hoping for a full, clearer look at her new Jedi-esque outfit, but I’m sure we’ll get a better look at that soon.

The First Order characters are looking amazing as always – and it is our first full look at Kylo Ren’s new outfit. His shorter tunic and cloak are sure to be inspiration for ‘everyday cosplay’ outfits.

What is your favourite costume from The Last Jedi revealed so far? I’m sure I’m not the only one mentally sketching ideas for inspired outfits 🙂
