I recently had the incredible opportunity to ask Jessica a few questions about her geek fashion label Beep Boop Beep Clothing, her favourite Star Wars fashion items, and her thoughts on the lack of licensed Padme’ Amidala inspired apparel. Read on for the full interview –
How long have you been creating Star Wars inspired apparel?
Since October 2015.
What inspired you to start designing and creating Star Wars inspired apparel?
The company is run by me (Jessica) and my husband (Garrett). He has always loved graphic design and illustrating, and been a life-long Star Wars fan. I love Instagram and marketing. So I had the idea of us working together to do a Star Wars-themed t-shirt business so that he can show everyone his art and do what he loves.
What are some of your favourite Star Wars fashion items in your wardrobe or wishlist (can be something you’ve made/plan to make)?
I think in my own wardrobe my favorite is our Happiest Rey On Earth shirt. I also love some pieces of jewelry (brooches and necklaces) from @femmedebloom . My husband is always wearing our shirts, and another favorite of his is an Olly Moss (a minimalist graphic designer he admires) Darth Vader shirt.
Do you have any particular favourite Star Wars fashion brands (licensed or fan made)?
I think probably our favorite is Her Universe–the designs are creative, and of course caters to a female audience, which we strive to do as well. I have many pieces from Her Universe.
Do you have a personal favourite design from your own range of Star Wars inspired apparel?
My favorite is The Happiest Rey On Earth, and my husbands is the Dapper Trooper.
Your range includes Padme’ Amidala inspired designs – what are your thoughts on the lack of licensed Padme’ Amidala themed apparel?
We are honestly quite surprised that there aren’t more! We feel like with many of Star Wars lesser-known characters as well as character from the prequels (like Padme), that many big-name brands don’t represent them because they think they won’t sell enough. They think all the business is with Leia, R2 merchandise, etc. I think part of the reason why our shirts have such a loyal fan-base is because we realize that the fans that are very invested in the Star Wars universe care very much about other characters too, and crave to see more of them. (In fact, our Max Rebo tee is one of our best-sellers) Padme isn’t as mainstream of course as Leia, since she hasn’t been around as much and wasn’t the original Star Wars girl. But being very close to many people in the geek community we know that she means a great deal to women.
What fabrics are used for your printed apparel?
We use the shirt company Bella Canvas, and the tees are 100% cotton.
Do you ship worldwide?
Yes we do!
Which is the best way for fans to get in touch with you regarding purchasing an item?
Via Instagram @beepboopbeepclothing or email email@example.com
