Review – Prophecy Girl Galactic Spy Shirt

Star Wars Bazine Netal inspired Galactic Spy shirt by Prophecy Girl

Today’s review features the Galactic Spy shirt by Prophecy Girl. Inspired by the First Order spy at Maz Kanata’s castle in The Force Awakens, the short sleeved button-down shirt features the bold black and white geometric pattern of Bazine Netal’s outfit. First released for pre-order last year, the shirt is now in stock and ready to ship!

I, spy…the best dressed snitch in the galaxy. This striking black & white rhombus pattern is perfect for lounging around alien bars and far-flung spaceports.

This collared shirt buttons up at the front, and features short raglan sleeves with buttoned sleeve tabs. Peach-soft polyester. Designed & made in the UK.

Available in sizes XS to 4XL, the shirt is priced at £38.00 each (approximately US$53.36 each) – Prophecy Girl can ship internationally, which is great!

The shirt arrived neatly folded inside a clear plastic bag, with a neat hologram foil sticker of the Prophecy Girl logo.

I am impressed that Prophecy Girl is already expanded beyond print-on-demand style apparel – of course I love printed tees, but I love seeing a fan fashion label offer some more stylish and sophisticated garment styles to choose from. Much of fan fashion has arisen to fill a gap left by licensed companies (like Bazine Netal themed apparel) so I’m excited to see collared shirts. I can’t wait to see what new designs Prophecy Girl will release in the future!

The Galactic Spy button down shirt is made from 100% polyester, featuring a black and white repeating geometric diamond-shaped pattern. The raglan style short sleeves have black buttoned tab detail at the hem, which matches the black button/button-hole panels down the front. The neckline has a black turn-down collar, and the shirt does up at the front with 7 black buttons. The lower hem has a soft curved shaped at both the front and back hemlines.

The shirt hangs nicely, the fabric has a soft feel to it, without being too light or flimsy. The Prophecy Girl website notes this as ‘peach soft polyester’, which is a good way of describing it. The seams are all overlocked (serged), and the sleeve hems are turned over so the edges are hidden.

This shirt is size XS – approximate measurements, taken with shirt lying flat –

  • 48cm Across chest (underarm to underarm)
  • 48cm Straight across lower hem (side seam to side seam)
  • 28cm Sleeve length (top shoulder seam to sleeve hem)
  • 56.5cm Length (back collar seam to back lower hem)

Of course the main feature of this shirt is the print. The effect is almost hypnotic, it reminds me of those designs that appear to ‘move’ when you stare at them too long. It is sure to get attention – it is a very striking design. The print here is clean and crisp – I’m really impressed.

The geometric diamond pattern is a great scale for a shirt – too small and it looses the similarities to the original design, or too large and it becomes abstract.

The shirt has a plain black turn-down collar, which connects to the black button/button hole panels down the front of the shirt. The plain black sections are made from a different fabric to the main shirt fabric – it is a little more rigid, to hold a tidy collar shape.

Inside the collar, there is an embroidered fabric garment tag, featuring the Prophecy Girl logo – the back notes this shirt is 100% polyester, made in the UK (care/washing instructions are also noted on the back). There is also a small black fabric tag, which notes the shirt size.

The shirt sleeves are a raglan shape, where the sleeve is joined by a diagonal seam from the underarm to collar. The sleeves here also have a dart (tuck) across the top, starting at the collar. This gives a little more shape across the shoulder, and removes bulk. A raglan sleeve tends to be a little looser around the shoulder than a standard sleeve – this works well with the casual fit of the shirt.

Bazine’s outfit is accented with plain black sections at the shoulders, legs, and hood, so that element has been cleverly introduced here for the collar, button strip and sleeve tabs. This references the original costume design in a way that balances costume inspiration with real-world shirt styles. The shoulder tabs are decorative, not functional – the buttons are sewn down.

The black panel down the front edges is very tidy, and provides great contrast with the geometric pattern. Using a different fabric for the front opening edges means that the print pattern doesn’t touch at this join. This bold black line is more aesthetically pleasing than a mismatch pattern join, which tends to happen with printed shirts down the button panels. The original costume does not have an opening at the front (presumably up the back), so instead of trying to hide a join, the black edging is a feature.

The shirt can be worn open, for a casual look over an outfit – the black edging is used on the inside edges of the shirt front as well.

The back of the shirt is free from seams – while back seams/darts are used to give shape to a shirt, I feel they would be distracting and interrupt the geometric pattern, which is the focus of this shirt. It is a clever shirt style to use for this pattern – the only seams are at the sides and sleeve seams which are relatively hidden and minimal, so the print pattern is not interrupted often. The lack of shaping seams gives the shirt a looser, casual fit (not tailored in at the waist), which is very comfortable to wear.

I have loved Bazine Netal’s outfit ever since it was first revealed in The Force Awakens photoshoot by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair. While I’m a Rebel girl myself, I couldn’t help but be instantly drawn to the fabulous black and white attire of the First Order spy – I needed it for my own wardrobe!

This shirt by Prophecy Girl is my favourite fashion interpretation of the costume that I’ve seen – smart, stylish, and subtly Star Wars. Now you can be a Star Wars fan undercover – it isn’t recognisably Star Wars to those who don’t know the reference, so it’s perfect for wearing everywhere, undetected like a true spy. Wear it as part of your regular wardrobe, or dress it up with black leggings, fabulous shoes and striking makeup for a really themed look!
