Review – Loungefly R2-D2 handbag

A much anticipated purchase just arrived in the mail, and I couldn’t wait to review it. It was several months ago that the first preview images of the Loungefly range were floating around on-line, which included the R2-D2 handbag – I knew I had to have it. The first wave of the collection came out in early December last year, but the R2-D2 handbag wasn’t released until just recently. As Loungefly.com doesn’t ship outside the US, I placed my order from Modern PinUp as soon as I could – I purchased my other two Loungefly x Star Wars handbags from them. I paid US$56 at Modern PinUp, compared to US$60 direct from Loungefly.

The handbag came in a black drawstring dust bag, with the classic Star Wars logo printed in silver on one side. The bag itself is amazing – the classic R2-D2 look is instantly recognisable. The front and back are different, showing the front and back of R2’s dome, with a metal enamelled Star Wars logo plaque on the back. The printed patent faux leather is embossed, so the blue panels are slightly recessed around the edges, giving that extra detailed touch, rather than a flat print. The sides of the bag are stiff, so the bag retains it’s shape when empty.

The top zip has two sturdy Loungefly zipper pulls, and opens down each side. The interior features Loungefly’s printed Star Wars lining fabric, with a zip up compartment on one side, and two fabric pouches on the other. The handles are attached with silver studs featuring the Rebel Alliance logo, a great touch. The white band sewn around the bottom is actually pearlescent when viewed in person, adding a subtle touch of sparkle. The bottom has four metal stud feet, to avoid scuffing the vinyl surface when placed down.

The bag measures approximately 27cm long, 12cm wide, 22cm tall – with the handles adding a further 10cm or so in height. It is the same size as the mini Darth Vader bag, and a little smaller than the comic print duffle, all from the same Loungefly x Star Wars collection. Below you can see some comparison photos for size. Personally, I much prefer this R2-D2 handbag over the recent Thinkgeek version – this design captures R2-D2’s features perfectly. It’s just so cute, I’m so happy to finally have this bag in my wardrobe!
