Today’s review features the Her Universe x Star Wars ROTJ limited edition necklace. Released in 2013, the necklace was released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. This necklace is a limited edition item, with only 1,250 made. Each necklace came with a numbered certificate hand signed by Ashley Eckstein, founder of Her Universe.
This is part of an ongoing series of retrospective reviews, to serve as a helpful reference for fans looking to collect older Star Wars fashion items.
Released back in 2013, the necklace is of course no longer available direct from Her Universe. If you’d like to add this necklace to your collection, trying setting up a saved eBay search for ‘Her Universe necklace‘ to receive email alerts when one shows up for sale (you can also try asking in The Kessel Runway Facebook group).
The necklace comes packaged in a wonderful black cardboard presentation box. The outer cardboard box has a neat textured surface, with the Her Universe logo printed in purple on the top lid. Inside, there is a black velvet hinged jewelry box, and the numbered edition card. The card is hand signed and numbered by Ashley Eckstein, founder of Her Universe and voice of Ahsoka Tano in The Clone Wars and Rebels. As you can see, my necklace is #382 out of 1,250. The first 500 of the necklaces were available at Disney Star Wars Weekends, with the rest available at a few other events that year, like Celebration Europe (Germany) and San Diego Comic Con.
Inside the velvet jewelry box, the necklace is placed on a black velvet insert card. The necklace chain is held in place through 2 slots in the top of the card, with the rest of the chain stored behind. This is a lovely presentation if giving the necklace as a gift, or just a special treat for yourself.
The necklace features a silver tone pendant, in the silhouette shape of Darth Vader’s helmet. The pendant features a printed image of the classic Return of the Jedi poster artwork by Kazuhiko Sano, which includes Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader. The image works well inside the helmet shape, so that no major elements are cut out or obscured. The printed image is recessed into the pendant, and covered with a clear plastic coating that adds a lovely gloss finish and protects the image.
The pendant measures approximately 3.5cm by 3.7cm by 0.3cm (at the widest parts). The back of the pendant has a shiny finish, and features the Return of the Jedi logo stamped into the back. As this is a licensed item, it also bears the standard ‘© LFL & TM’ copyright stamp. The back of most Star Wars jewelry is rather plain, so I was surprised and delighted to see the additional movie logo included on this necklace.
The pendant is hung on a silver-tone chain necklace, which closes with a standard circular jewelry clasp. The chain measures approximately 61cm long (including clasp) – it does not have any additional adjustment length. I quite like the length, but you can also remove the pendant and hang it on a different style/length necklace if you prefer. The pendant hanger ring of this necklace is quite large, so you don’t even need to open the ring to remove the pendant from the chain, it can simply slide off.
I enjoy collecting older Star Wars fashion items – for a variety of reasons, sometimes we are not able to purchase an item at the time it was released, so it’s fun to be able to finally find it later. I was not able to attend any of the events where this necklace was originally sold, so I’m really happy to be able to have found one on eBay. The necklace is a lovely collectable for celebrating the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi, and the signed card is a neat bonus for any Her Universe fan.
